We Have a March to Finish

Hillary Clinton placed herself at the heart of the civil rights movement at the 42nd anniversary of the march in Selma. She attended a speech by the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr. She knew so many of the leaders of the movement. She was married to a man they all loved. And she even rolled out an occasional twang as she spoke (and not a New York twang).

She took advantage of the uncertainty many African-American leaders, like Congressman John Lewis (D-GA), over whether to support her or Obama. Rhetorically, she made it sound like Lewis had sided with her, saying “remained with us today” in her text. While she didn’t mean it that way, the sound byte certainly sounded like she did.

Hillary then, magnanimously congratulated the civil rights movement for making it possible for Barrack Obama to run for president... and Bill Richardson, an Hispanic, too… and, with a wink, “me.”

She thanked her audience and the heroes of the civil rights movement for making it possible for her to run for president, too. After all, women are the greatest beneficiaries of civil rights legislation.

Which brings us back to Hillary’s message of the day:

We have a march to finish. Despite the thrill that we have a woman, an African-American, and an Hispanic with serious aspirations to the White House, it took us too long to get here and we still have a long way to go.

We have a March to finish.
