We not only want to help you find the best truck rental but we also want you to be safe when driving the truck so below are some things that you should keep in mind when driving your rental truck.
Be careful backing up the truck.
Being that trucks are most likely larger than what you are used to driving you always want to be cautious that there isn’t a person or another vehicle behind you. Always double check when backing up. We always suggest avoiding backing up when possible while you are driving a truck rental.
Watch sharp turns.
This is one of the most important tips! If you know where you will be traveling to, plan out the route before you do it, this will help you avoid sharp turns when possible. If you can’t avoid sharp turns then have someone out of the truck watching.
The 5 car rule!
Everyone remembers when they had their driver's test and it was said to give a three car buffer between the cars in front of you. However, since a truck is much heavier than a car and since you typically have a large load, you won't always have the stopping power you need with a three car buffer. We always suggest allowing five vehicle lengths between you and the vehicle ahead of you on any road. This will give you time to stop and avoid collisions.
Watch overhead clearances!
You are now a larger object and many roads have overhead obstructions, so you need more clearance overhead. Be sure to allow for 14 foot of overhead clearance and beware of obstructions such as canopies, drive-thru's, overpasses, tree branches, bridges, parking garages and signs that don’t allow truck traffic.
